TECHNIQUES TO IMPROVE FLUENCY

Research has demonstrated that teachers should not work on fluency until the student has mastered basic phonemic awareness. All "fluff" reading activities ( using art or music to teach reading) should be eliminated since research results demonstrate it as a total waste of time.

1. Repeated readings is the most common way to improve fluency. Research shows that this method usually results in a 25%-75% rate and accuracy improvement in one week!

2. Readers Theater

3. Paired reading

4. Oral recitation reading

5. Partner reading

6. Reading while listening ( tape recorded)

7. Modeling of prosodic features (stress, phrasing and pitch)

8. Reading with support or assistance

9. Direct instruction and feedback

10. Teach appropriate pausing between sentences.

11. Decrease pauses within sentences.
